24 hours to Fakarava

Raymarine chartplotter showing Turtlebones approaching Fakarava

This is a quick 4am update so people know where we are.

Unfortunately a posting in the Predictwind tracking has a future September date and so we cannot post new position updates until the helpdesk fixes it. Sharon has become very proficient at the process, so I am confident we will all have a good track to follow as they continue their journey beyond Fakarava.

As Bill described in his last post about the Tuamodos and you can see from the picture of the chart above, the area we are entering is dotted with archipelago with the entrance to Raukuru just 5 nm north of where we will enter Fakarava.

We are currently 184nm to our destination and it looks like we will continue to have great winds all the way and arrive just in time for a calm spell (which will be great for diving). It has been a great sail for my last longer passage on this leg of the journey!

We have not heard back from the Dive Shop yet but I expect you will all see at least one or two more posts in the next 4 days. I will say (just to spread the schmaltzy goodbyes out), I will forever be indebted to Bill and Sharon for allowing me to join them for part of their adventure.

As always I learn so much from Bill on these outings and benefit from his experience. I am happy when I can add some value back, other than simply doing the dishes!

  1. Shawn, your descriptive dispatches will be greatly missed. In addition to Bill and Sharon, we too will miss your presence on this incredible journey. Enjoy your last few days aboard Turtlebones…and safe travels back to your family.

  2. It’s true, Shawn’s not allowed to cook on Turtlebones, although he claims to be quite proficient. The problem is, he’s excellent at doing the dishes. Actually, the real problem is me; I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to the galley. I have a hard enough time sharing the cooking with Sharon.
